VIDEO: Chinese Artists Explore Their Versions of Time

Yang Xinguang, a young Chinese artist based in Beijing, set out to count the grains of sand in a pile as part of his piece titled "Counting Sand." He counted twice and arrived at two different numbers: 185,465 and 186,837. The artist says the process is like meditation. And with the piece, he managed to measure the passing of time in a tangible way. This work is on view as part of the "O’clock — time design, design time" exhibition at the Art Museum of China Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA Art Museum) in Beijing.

The exhibition is organized by the Milanese Triennale Design Museum together with the CAFA Art Museum. It is an expanded version of similar show in 2011 in Milan. The Chinese edition included several Chinese artists' works, emphasizing the different approaches to the concept of time in the East and the West.
