Week in Review: Everything Seen and Sold at the Miami Fairs, From Kanye to Koons

Our most-talked-about stories in Visual Art, Design & Architecture, Fashion & Style, and Performing Arts, December 3 - 7, 2012:

ART

— ARTINFO editor-in-chief Benjamin Genocchio gave a video tour of some of his favorite booths at Art Basel Miami Beach, including Paul Kasmin and Sean Kelly.

— While Ben Davis argued that memories of the often-chaotic art fair experience can be fleeting, he listed 15 works at this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach worth remembering.

— Julia Halperin and Rachel Corbett reported on the low-key crowds and strong lower-market buys at Art Basel Miami Beach’s VIP preview day, and Judd Tully saw a sustained hunger for both emerging and established artists as the fair continued

— This is also the week of the Miami satellite fairs, and Julia Halperin visited the collector-driven NADA and collaborative SEVEN, which featured galleries hit hard by Hurricane Sandy; while Rachel Corbett headed to the new indie Untitled and Wynwood’s Art Miami. ARTINFO also gave a video tour of PULSE Miami, stopping to talk with Ángel Marcos and Sam Messenger about the fair with international flair.

— After a day prowling the fairs comes the parties, and Ann Binlot reported from Miami on White Cube’s kick-off bash, Jonathan Horowitz’s “Free Store,” the Dom Pérignon Luminous Rosé exclusive gathering, and celebs who cruised the southeast coast.

— Also in Miami is something more risk-taking in the Bass Museum’s “Endless Renaissance,” and Scott Indrisek explored its six projects by six artists that upend history and expectations.

DESIGN & ARCHITECTURE

— Janelle Zara gave her first impressions from the functional art-focused Design Miami/, with mid-century treasures and contemporary concepts.

— This Wednesday, prolific Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer died at the age of 104 in Rio De Janeiro, and Kelly Chan Muji creative director Kenya Haragave a video interview with ARTINFO on his new project, “Architecture for Dogs,” designs just for canines, as part of Design Miami/.

— The former apartment of brutalist architect and Yale School of Architecture dean Paul Rudolphhit the market at $27.5 million.

— The Southern California Institute of Architecturereleased a massive online archive of lectures and symposia going back to 1974 and featuring architects like Frank Gehry, Louis Kahn, and Reyner Banham.

FASHION & STYLE

— While most of the ensembles at Art Basel Miami Beach failed to inspire, Ann Binlot photographed some attendees who brought a flourish to their fashion.

— Last weekend at Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills, Lady Gagapurchased 55 of the many Michael Jackson wardrobe and memorabilia items at the sale.

— For something dark and beautiful at Art Basel Miami Beach: jeweler Luis Moraisis selling handcrafted porcelain skulls from his studio.

Louis Vuitton kicked off its stylish segment of Art Basel Miami Beachwith a capsule of travel-inspired objects.

— Nicholas Remsen thought Karl Lagerfeld’s Métiers d’Art collection for Chanel, shown this week at Linlithgow Palace in Scotland, had its romantic moments in Highland haute couture.

PERFORMING ARTS

— Bryan Hood declared DMX’s rendition of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” not only the best version of the song, but “the single greatest thing you will experience on the internet this month.”

Jay-Z celebrated his 43rd birthday this week, and Craig Hubert revealed something you might not know about the rapper/Brooklyn Nets stakeholder: he created a shade of blue.

— Hints of the next film from the long-dormant Shane Carruthwere revealed in the trailer for “Upstream Color.”

— Among celebrity attendees of Art Basel Miami Beach this week was Rick Ross, who stopped by the Jack Shainman Gallery booth to purchase a Richard Mosse photograph.

— Director Jay Bulger spoke with Bryan Hood about his new documentary “Beware of Mr. Baker” on the British musician Ginger Baker’s forgotten brilliance

Art+Auction's Power 2012 Recap: Week 1

Art+Auction's Power 2012 Recap: Week 1

This week ARTINFO published the first five parts of Art+Auction’s annual Power List, naming the individuals who have impacted the art world the most in the last 12 months.

Part 1 focused on “Auction Power,” and included Wang Yannan, Director and President of China Guardian, and Michael McGinnis, CEO and founding head of contemporary art at Phillips de Pury & Company.

Part 2, “Power of Tradition,” cited people whose connections to the art world represented ongoing innovation within long chains of legacy, like newly formed veteran-dealer team Connery, Pissaro, Seydoux, as well as Ben Janssens, owner of the eponymous Oriental Art dealership based out of London and champion of the ever-expanding TEFAF Maastricht.

The year’s super-collectors were the focus of Part 3, and included Bowmont Art founder and West Coast collector Dean Valentine, and newcomer to the postwar and contemporary art scene, George Economou.

The most innovative minds in design from 2012 were highlighted in Part 4, from Chinese contemporary art dealer Pearl Lam to French architect Rudy Ricciotti.

Lastly, Part 5 ranked 2012’s power dealers. One of Chelsea’s first pioneers, Andrea Rosen branched out and acquired new talent, while French gallerist Emmanuel Perrotin geared up to launch two new locations.

Stay tuned for the second half of Power 2012, which will name the year’s biggest patrons, players, personalities, and artists to watch.

Beyond the A-Rod and Kanye sightings and party-hopping revelry (which might coincide, if you’re lucky), let’s not forget why we all came to Miami: to witness examples of the world’s greatest works of art and design. And even for those unfamiliar with the latter (we overheard one man on his cell phone saying, “It’s amazing, like, art ... you can use”), the booths at Design Miami/ dazzled. 

“Our goal is really to offer a journey through design history,” fair director Marianne Goebl told ARTINFO. In the same journey-offering spirit, we rounded up a few choice pieces guaranteed to impress the non design-savvy, from the architecturally-inspired shelving units of Eames that in turn inspired the modernist purveyor Mark McDonald’s booth, to the bizarre technological innovations that produced a lamp that continuously shatters itself. Current Exhibition: “Cold Blood” at Lisa Cooley, 107 Norfolk Street, New York, through December 23, 2012.

“Cold Blood” at Lisa Cooley is your first solo exhibition in the United States. Does this show represent a new direction for you in any other ways?

I really like the period just after an exhibition is installed, when for the first time I can actually see and experience what I’ve been working on all those months. The objects that make up “Cold Blood” are new things in the world; they only started existing at 6 p.m. on Sunday the 11th of November 2012 when the show officially opened at Lisa Cooley, so I’m still working out what they are. Can you ask me this question again in a year or so when I might be able to give you a better answer?

You are known for making flat things no longer flat, like pleating paper or curving sheet metal or turning aluminum and digital prints into “gills” for a gallery wall. What interests you about making your art — and by extension the gallery space — strange and deceptive? 

I imagine my work as first and foremost realistic. It’s me saying what it’s like to exist in and with the post-industrial, late capitalist environment that I am a part of. But my experience of the work is only a very small part of the picture — if you see it as strange and deceptive, that’s the beginning of another version of events.

The metal fingers that point out from the walls in “Cold Blood” got their nails painted at a salon on the Lower East Side. How did the salon react when you brought them in? Why did you want them to have a real manicure?

Like any other of the fabricators I work with, the manicurist at Le Chic Nail Spa, a block away from the gallery at 128 Rivington Street, was very practical. She looked at my six bronze and aluminium cast fingers, proposed a price — $6 — asked if I also wanted the cuticles done, and then made a great manicure.

In March 2012, your work “Hard Metal Body” was installed along the escalator of the Notting Hill Gate station on the London Underground as part of the Art on the Underground project. [Click here for Modern Painters’ interview with Channer on the project.] What was different about working in a public, heavily trafficked place, and how did your process of dressing a space change with the utilitarian location?

“Hard Metal Body” is installed in a very sexy metal-walled escalator tunnel at Notting Hill tube station in London. I imagine the London Underground as a machine, similar to any of the other vast industrial and post-industrial machines that we become part of every day, and it was different to work with a context this specific. The “Hard Metal Body” of the title is me addressing the body of the tunnel, and of the machine. It was also a pleasure to work with very strict limitations, which I usually have to invent for myself. In this case the rules were made for me — the artwork had to consist of a digital image printed onto sticky-backed vinyl, and installed on a very specific section of the hard metal body of the tunnel.

I don’t see “Hard Metal Body” as a “public” artwork, because I don’t imagine the London Underground as a “public” place. The escalator tunnel that the work is a part of is a commercial place; the sides of the tunnel are usually used for advertising, but what I put there doesn’t operate like commercial communication, it’s much weirder than that. The result is something deeply awkward and uncomfortable; emotions that I’ve been thinking more and more lately are a legitimate response to have to an artwork.

You’ve been known to plant people at your openings wearing dresses that relate to your art in an effort to subtly incorporate the audience into the exhibition. Why do you do this, and when did you start? What does it suggest about how you want your audience to relate to your work? 

The first time I showed in New York was as part of “Took My Hands Off Your Eyes Too Soon,” a group show at Tanya Bonakdar, curated by Ryan Gander, in 2007. I got a grant from the British Council to travel to New York for the show, and brought with me a beautiful sixties Op-Art dress that I hired from a costume archive. I’d been fascinated by the reception of Bridget Riley’s early work, and her first trip to New York, where she saw dresses apparently made from prints taken from her paintings in the department store windows. An actor wore the dress to the opening of the group show, but I saw this as very much about objects — about trying to locate an object right at the edges of the exhibition, wanting the objects I make to behave in certain ways, rather than as a way of asking an audience to behave in a particular way. I wouldn’t say that my work is made in ignorance of the fact that other people will come and see it — I see myself as an exhibition maker as much as a maker of individual objects — but at the same time there isn’t a specific “response” I am looking for. The work is just me talking to myself.

What’s the last show that you saw?

Rosemarie Trockel’s “A Cosmos” at the New Museum.

What’s the last show that surprised you? Why?

See above. Because she managed to make a “retrospective” that doesn’t fix or solidify her work, and for a large part of the exhibition it’s impossible to tell which objects are her work and which are the works of others. Wow.

What’s your favorite place to see art?

There isn’t one. I love art because it continually surprises me.

What’s the most indispensable item in your studio?

At this time of year, my heaters, and thermal underwear.

Where are you finding ideas for your work these days?

In details.

Do you collect anything?

Yes, lots of stuff that I cannot categorize. Starting to work out what it is, how I feel about it, and what it means is my work as an artist.

What’s the last artwork you purchased?

I’ve never bought an artwork, but I’ve done some great swaps and trades.

What’s the first artwork you ever sold?

Goldsmiths College bought a work from my degree show when I graduated. It paid for my first month’s studio rent in  “The Real World.”

 What’s the weirdest thing you ever saw happen in a museum or gallery?

People unconsciously tipping their heads to one side when looking at Brâncuși’s “Sleeping Muse.”

What’s your favorite post-gallery watering hole or restaurant?

What’s the last great book you read?

Andrew Hodges’ biography of Alan Turing.

What under-appreciated artist, gallery, or work do you think people should know about?

Russia Probes Chapman Brothers, British Empire Museum Goes Rogue, and More

Chapman Brothers Under Fire in Russia: The members of Pussy Riot aren't the only ones getting targeted in Russia for allegedly mocking the Church with their art. British artists Jake and Dinos Chapman are being investigated by Russian prosecutors for potentially violating the country's extremism laws with their recent installation at the Hermitage Museum. The work featured figurines dressed in Nazi uniforms and showed scientist Stephen Hawking speaking with Adam and Eve. [Independent]

– British Empire Museum Loses Trove of Loans: Bristol's British Empire and Commonwealth Museum — which is now closed and being audited by the city council, and investigated by police —has lost some 144 loaned objects and artworks. Some of the missing artifacts may have been sold against owners' wishes and without their knowledge. "I decided I would like the picture back," said Lord Caldecote of his Thomas Buttersworth painting. "It turned out the museum had sold the picture through Christie's. I don't suppose we'll be able to get it back again." [Guardian]

Cooper Union Students Stage Protest: Dozens of students, alumni, and supporters of design school Cooper Union gathered in Washington Square Park on Saturday to march in protest of the school's plans to begin charging tuition. "[Founder] Peter Cooper must be rolling in his grave," said art student Saar Shemesh. The protest is the latest in a series of actions planned by students, including storming a trustee meeting to weep in front of board members and staging a sit-in inside the school's clock tower. Flash Art Launches Its Own Art Fair: The Italian magazine Flash Art is launching its own art fair in Milan. The event will take place from February 7 to 10 and feature 80 galleries that will mount solo presentations or curatorial projects. If you aren't sick of art fairs after a week in Miami, hop on a plane to Italy! [FT]

– Property Magnate Commissions Portrait Series: When does art collecting become a form of megalomania? Ask Manila-based property magnate Robbie Antonio. The collector has commissioned a dozen artists to paint his portrait, including Kenny Scharf, Marilyn Minter, David LaChapelle, and Julian Opie. He hopes to work with Takashi Murakami next. "I wanted to work with artists I like, to see how they interpret me. I want to be seen in their eyes," Antonio said. [TAN]

– Meet the Mole-Catcher of Versailles: Think you have a cool job? Think again. Gardener Jerome Dormion, 36, is the latest in a 330-year dynasty of royal mole-catchers charged with keeping the 2,000 acres surrounding the royal palace of Versailles free of burrowing rodents. (His preferred tool is a device that, he says with a smile, "resembles a guillotine.") "It might sound funny, but it's serious work. My job is to make sure molehills don't deface Europe's finest gardens," explained Dormion. "I'm known as the king's mole catcher because Versailles is still the palace... The king might be gone, but the palace still has moles, loads of them." [AP]

– Turkey Takes to EU Court Over British Museum Sculptures: A Turkish campaign demanding the return of sculptures created to adorn the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus in 350 BCE from the British Museum— which acquired the artifacts in the mid-19th century — is trying an unorthodox tactic, using human rights legislation in a European court to force the objects' repatriation. The campaign also includes a petition with 118,000 signatures and a short documentary about the sculptures that will be shown to the Strasbourg court. [Guardian]

– China Calls for Boycott of Stolen Seal Auction: The Chinese government has called for a boycott of Artcurial's upcoming auction in Paris of an 18th-century jade imperial seal that was looted from Beijing's Summer Palace in 1860 during a raid by a Franco-British expedition. China's efforts to have the lot removed from the auction entirely were unsuccessful, and the Qing dynasty artifact is expected to fetch between €150,000-200,000 ($193,000-258,000). [AFP]

– Louvre-Lens Opens With Blockbuster Numbers: Though it won't take up regular hours until Wednesday, the Louvre's new northern outpost, Louvre-Lens, was open continuously from 10 a.m. on Saturday until 6 p.m. on Monday, a 32-hour span during which it was visited by a whopping 36,000 people, making for a grand total of 51,000 visitors in its pre-opening week, including French president François Hollande. The institution expects attendance for its first year to reach 700,000, with half-a-million annually thereafter. [AFP]

New Getty Director Talks Acquisitions, Repatriation: In his first interview on the job, new Getty Museum director Timothy Potts discussed acquisitions. (He's interested in purchasing antiquities from the Mediterranean rim and Asia and "would not rule out" a donation of 20th-century art.) On the hot-button issue of cultural patrimony, he said, "It's important to strike a balance between preventing acquisitions of works [that] would encourage further looting of ancient sites and providing an appropriate home for these objects." Rotterdam is not a stereotypically quaint Dutch city. Virtually flattened in the Second World War, it is now a dynamic modern port with striking tower blocks either side of the Nieuwe Maas waterway. Much of the architecture, from the elegant Erasmus Bridge to the tilted yellow cube houses at Overblaak, is remarkable. Visitors will also discover a cluster of first-class museums around the Museumpark.

Netherlands Architecture Institute

The Netherlands Architecture Institute (better known as the NAI), is a multi-purpose center on the edge of the Museumpark that aims to inform and inspire visitors to take an interest in their surroundings. NAI's vast archive of unusual models and drawings includes a housing complex designed in the shape of a paper clip. The institute also hosts large-scale exhibitions: The work of Philadelphia-based architect Louis Kahn is on view through January 6, 2013 and Dutchville, an engaging permanent exhibition, looks at city life in the Netherlands—a highlight is the recordings of locals debating the merits of controversial buildings. Also included in the NAI's entrance fee is admission to the nearby Sonneveld House, a prime example of Nieuwe Bouwen architecture (the Dutch version of functionalism). The 1930s villa was considered to be cutting-edge and luxurious when it was built, with state-of-the-art gadgets such as heated towel rails in the bathrooms and buttons under the dining table to summon the maid.

Erasmus Bridge

The Erasmusbrug was designed by Dutch architect Ben van Berkel and was completed in 1996. In that short period of time the bridge has become a symbol of Rotterdam. It is named after the humanist Erasmus, who was born in Rotterdam in the 1460s. The 2,625-foot-long bridge links the city center to the redeveloped port area of Kop van Zuid. Nicknamed "The Swan," its 456-foot-high asymmetrical steel pylon resembles the bird's neck, while the cables flowing behind are like its feathers. For the best views of the span, cross the Nieuwe Maas on a ferry from Veerhaven to the Hotel New York (Watertaxi Rotterdam departs every 15 minutes), and walk back over the bridge to the city center. An added bonus is the panoramic view of Rotterdam's high-rise skyline.

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

Rotterdam's preeminent art museum, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is housed in a stately, redbrick 1930s building across from the NAI. The current big draw is The Road to Van Eyck, a blockbuster exhibition (through February 10, 2013), which sheds light on the Flemish painter and his contemporaries. Other attractions include memorable Old Master paintings such as Bruegel, whose famous Tower of Babel is the museum's best-known work of art, many Impressionist works (Degas' graceful statuette of a young ballet dancer was the only sculpture the artist exhibited in his lifetime), and a strong surrealist section, which includes Dali's lobster telephone. Don't miss the applied art and design galleries, which show classics such as a Rietveld chair.

Kunsthal Rotterdam

The Kunsthal, an intriguing building bisected by a sloping walkway, is located at the southern side of the Museumpark. It hit the headlines in October 2012 when seven artworks by world-famous artists such as Gauguin and Monet were stolen from the current Avant-Gardes exhibition. Despite those loses the show is still remarkable and continues through January 20, 2013 with 150 modern works organized to highlight interesting visual bonds (a Warhol collage of Elvis is shown next to a Picasso portrait, for example). The Kunsthal shows some two dozen exhibitions a year: A major retrospective of Aristide Maillol includes 16 of his monumental female sculptures (through February 10, 2013); Museum Minutes encourages visitors to view paintings from deck chairs and treadmills to illustrate the way we superficially view art in galleries for short periods of time (through January 13, 2013).

Rotterdam's annual North Sea Jazz is the world's biggest indoor jazz festival, with a thousand musicians, some 150 performances, and jazz spanning all eras and genres (July 12–14, 2013). Other highlights in 2013 include the long-established International Film Festival Rotterdam (January 23–February 3), which focuses on innovative filmmaking, and Art Rotterdam (February 7–10), a contemporary art fair during which you can stay in the homes of the city's artists. The new Rotterdam Unlimited (June 11–16) merges the city's large-scale Summer Carnival with the Dunya Festival of multicultural, performing arts.

Stroom Rotterdam hotel occupies a former electricity plant in the new Lloydkwartier neighborhood (stroom is Dutch for current). The industrial-influenced design includes a giant cast iron pulley system hanging over the reception and metallic staircases leading up to its 21 guest rooms. Most of these are spilt-level, with outsize baths and two rainforest showers in the spacious bathrooms. The modish bar and restaurant has a wall of mirrors and an open-plan kitchen and attracts a lively crowd at weekends. The restaurant serves up a wide-ranging menu from fish and chips to deer with beetroot mash. In good weather, grab a table on the roof terrace, which has excellent views of the city's landmark Euromast observation tower.

MIAMI BEACH — The Standard Spa, Miami Beach picked up a touch of Hollywood Friday night as celebrities showed up en masse to mix with bold names from the worlds of art and fashion. The event, a signing and party to celebrate photographer Terry Richardson’s new book, “Terrywood,” was presented by HTC and OHWOW. Demi Moore, who had been making the Art Basel Miami Beach party rounds all week, even threw on a pair of hipster glasses for the occasion. Pharrell Williams, Jared Leto, and Kelly Osbourne were on hand, as were several members of the art world, including MoMA PS1 director Klaus Biesenbach, and artists José Parlá, Aurel Schmidt, and Ryan McGinley. Harper’s Bazaar editor Glenda Bailey, Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci, and shoe designer Nicholas Kirkwood were among the fashion names in attendance.

Partygoers tagged their party photographs #HTCLovesTerry on Instagram and waited eagerly for the photos to print out in one area, while waitresses handed out cups of mint-flavored ice cream. Everyone flocked to the stage when rapper and singer Azealia Banks appeared around 10:45 p.m. for an energetic set that got the crowd going. “Who’s drunk? Who’s high? Who’s f*cking tonight?” she asked the audience, who responded less than enthusiastically to the last question. “Okay, none of ya’ll are f*cking tonight,” Banks joked. As soon as her set winded down, several guests were making plans for their next stop on the Art Basel Miami Beach party circuit. After all, there were many more celebrations to get to that night.

MIAMI BEACH — The luxury quilted jacket purveyor Moncler selected an unconventional location for a sophisticated affair to celebrate its 60th anniversary on Friday night: the 7th floor of 1111 Lincoln Road, the boldly futuristic Herzog & de Meuron parking garage. Once in the space, it was indeed a magical scenario, thanks in part to the perfect weather that evening. The cars were emptied out and the floor was transformed into an oasis of white — the color of the carpet, tables, chairs, and flowers. Clear views of the Miami skyline surrounded the venue, while rays of light darted through the structure’s concrete v-shaped columns. Moncler president Remo Ruffini entertained an assortment of guests from art, entertainment, and fashion, including actress Uma Thurman, actor Stephen Dorff, architect David Adjaye, and model Karolina Kurkova. The gift was no doubt one of the most coveted of the entire week: a pristine long, white Moncler cape.

Burberry Prorsum Sets the Stage for a Glam Rock Spring

Much has been said over the Factory-esque metallic pieces in Burberry Prorsum’s spring/summer men’s 2013 collection. There are the glam lovers, the glitter haters, and rapper Tinie Tempah, who sported one of the lineup’s shimmering bombers at London 2012’s closing ceremonies (to droves of Twitterfare, no less). 

While the conservatism of British dressing codes the label’s DNA, creative director Christopher Bailey consistently injects a playful and editorial-friendly slant into his Burberry Prorsum runways. Here, he also hits his digital stride; the designer is one of the industry’s most innovative when it comes to the Internet. 

Now widely mimicked, Bailey pioneered the platform for off-the-catwalk, online ordering. He was also a forerunner in live-streaming the otherwise exclusive fashion show, glitch-free and wide-screened out of Hyde Park. Thus, spring/summer 2013’s Technicolor current aptly reflects Bailey’s embrace of our brave new digital world, envisioned herein with a classical sensibility. As the Brits say, it’s brills. 

Think Anselm Reyle-esque crinkled and colored foils applied on house-favorite trench coats, drain-pipe lamé pants in Disney princess pink, and jackets aplenty in matted satin. The palette spanned from jewel-tone to disco-ball, its fabrics and constructs working in fluid tandem with the collection’s other standouts: an earth-toned geometric print on shirting and outerwear, and proportion-shifted military parkas. The glam factor won’t be everyone’s cup of Earl Grey (a coworker narrowed her eyes, tilted her head, and muttered “Zoolander?”), but for Bailey cultists and fashion daredevils alike, expect to see the streets-runneth-kaleidoscopic come December’s deliveries.

"Jamshed Bharucha’s absence and lack of direct communication over the past week has made it clear that he is a liability to this institution," the students said in a statement. Billionaire Behind Biennale Bails: The Greek entrepreneur Kikos Papadopoulos, who launched the inaugural Santorini Biennale in an effort to bring tourists to the depressed Aegean Sea island, has gone missing along with many of the works featured in the exhibition, leaving curators and rents unpaid. "I was interested in where the money was coming from, given the economic situation, but he just waved his hand. ‘It is all secured,’ he told me," said British artist Tomas Poblete, who Papadopoulos hired as a curator for the project. "He gave us every reason to believe." [Independent]

Will Smith Shopped ABMB With Seven Bodyguards: Reports of celebrity shopping sprees at last week's Miami fairs continue to pour in, including Floridian rapper Rick Ross buying a Richard Mosse photograph from Jack Shainman— the same booth that was shut down when Will Smith strolled in with his seven (7!) bodyguards. Former New York Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey dropped $200,000 on a pair of tiger sculptures by Domingo Zapata, while Jay-Z joined his wife Beyoncé in browsing the ABMB booths, and bought a $20,000 painting by Chicago-based artist Hebru Brantley titled "Everyone's Scared." Zurich Lost Over 5,000 Artworks: Taking full inventory of its 35,000-piece art collection for the first time in nearly a century, the Swiss city discovered that 5,176 — roughly 15 percent — are missing. Among them are 1,400 unique works, including a Le Corbusier painting that the city purchased for 80,000 Swiss Francs ($85,800). The other artworks that have been lost were insured for a total of 1 million Swiss Francs ($1.07 million). The city's entire collection is valued at approximately 121 million Swiss Francs ($129.8 million). [AFP]

Holocaust Museum Takes National Tour: To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. is taking its show on the road. The museum will host events in four cities, including Los Angeles and Chicago. It's also waging a national marketing campaign with in-your-face ads, such as one that asks, "What if Hitler had access to the Internet?" Notes Lorna Miles, the museum's marketing officer: "Hate on the Internet is on the rise, anti-Semitism is on the rise, Holocaust denial is on the rise... the relevance and importance of the museum has never been greater." New York + Math Museum = Opening Soon: New York City's new Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) will open its doors on Saturday with interactive exhibits devoted to making concepts like topology and number theory more tangible. Its Enigma Café will serve puzzles in place of coffee, and a 3D printer-equipped design studio dubbed the Mathenaeum will be open to visitors. The museum's founders see it as a corrective for conventional math education. "It's like teaching kids to read music, and never even telling them that instruments exist," says co-founder Cindy Lawrence. "You don't fix that by more testing. You do it with a cultural institution that can change the norms and perceptions about math — we want to be that place." [NewScientist]

Surrealist Collection Languishes While Berlin Searches for Space: Collectors Ulla and Heiner Pietzsch set off a furor in Berlin earlier this year when it became public that their planned donation of Surrealist artwork to the city's Gemäldegalerie would displace the museum's Old Masters collection. The gift is now on hold due to space constraints and will likely force Berlin to set a timetable for constructing an Old Masters museum, which would clear the Gemäldegalerie for 20th-century art. "If they don’t find a space, we will withdraw our offer, but I don’t think that will happen," said Heiner Pietzsch. [Bloomberg]

Arts Donors Are Up — But Should They Be?: The number of philanthropic donations to arts and culture organizations in the U.K. has grown in the last five years, according to the latest Coutts Million Pound Donor Report, but their overall value has fallen. The development may not please philosopher Peter Singer, who, in a recent article on year-end giving, called philanthropy for cultural activities "morally dubious." [The Stage, NYT]

ACE Suffers Additional Budget Cut: Arts Council England, an organization that distributes grants to cultural groups across the country, will have its own funding cut by £11.6 million before 2015. The belt-tightening follows a 30-percent budget reduction announced last year. "We must now look closely at the figures and decide how we will pass these cuts on," said ACE chief Alan Davey. "Some organisations are also having to deal with local authority cuts and so the situation is extremely challenging." [BBC]

Texas Biennial Announces 2013 Curators: Artist K8 HardyNasher Sculpture Center director Jeremy Strick, and art critic David Pagel are among the 13 curators selected to organize next year's Texas Biennial, which kicks off September 5. The fifth annual event will extend across the state, with programming in Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Marfa. Curators will make their selections from an open call to artists living and working in Texas. [Press Release]
